Hyaets is a community building organization which branches out in several directions, including an urban ministry, an intentional Christian community, and retreat experiences. The ministries of Hyaets are based upon a holistic, relational, need-meeting model. At the core of Hyaets is an intentional Christian community that lives in a low-income, high-risk area of Charlotte, North Carolina to minister with and learn from those that society would call “the least of these.” This community partners with individuals, families, churches, and parachurch organizations to provide a number of ministries to the poor, marginalized, and forgotten of Charlotte. Through these ministries and partnerships, Hyaets seeks to inspire, enrich, and embody community by building bridges between the poor and the affluent.
Hyaets residential members, known as The Arbor, and their families currently occupy 3 houses. Current residential members include:
Non-resident partners are not residential members of Hyaets, but are passionate about the vision of Hyaets and serve as partners and advisors within the Hyaets Community. They include:
Joanie is an experienced music minister in the church. Her passions are music, pastoral care, and worship. She likes to run, sing, and spend time outdoors. In addition to Hyaets, Joanie serves as Director of Music Ministries at Christ United Methodist Church. As of late, Joanie has enjoyed being crafty and learning to be a mom to Joy Kate.
Jason is a life-long learner. Jason is always learning more about the world, himself, being a dad to Joy Kate, and being a friend-mentor-parent to Jamar. His passions are teaching, writing, reading, and music. He likes to watch sports, play dominoes with neighbors, and spend time with his dog, Jesse. In addition to Hyaets, Jason serves as Youth Minister at Christ United Methodist Church.
Kevin grew up on Avalon Ave - one of the toughest streets in Charlotte. He attends Spaugh Middle School and plays basketball for school and AAU.
Joy Kate is exactly what her name means: Pure Joy! She loves horses, singing, dancing and being outside.
Nora Owyn is a bubbling 1 year old who loves to take naps, play with her big sister and cuddle up next to her mommy and daddy. If you ever need cheering up, just ask her to smile for you!
Greg loves to laugh. He also enjoys hanging out with John Tyson and Helms, reading almost anything, and pitching horseshoes with neighbors, which he thinks may be the contemplative’s perfect game. Greg currently serves as Chaplain with the Regional AIDS Interfaith Network, and also works as a saxophonist around Charlotte, having had the privilege of performing with many local groups and a few nationally-known artists, including Natalie Cole, Manhattan Transfer, the Four Tops, and the Temptations. Greg is widely feared around Enderly Park for a deadly jump shot and an impeccably executed pick and roll.
Helms is a world class juggler of sorts. Right now, Helms is juggling being a mom, serving as associate campus minister at UNC-Charlotte, making and selling crafts at the local market, taking care of youth and children in the neighborhood, keeping the house clean, and writing for her blog Little TreeTrimmings. Helms is passionate about discipleship, creative expression, and caring for others. For Helms, the perfect Sunday consists of waking up, going to church, eating lunch, taking a long nap, and playing with John Tyson and Greg. Helms lives at the Hyaets Parkway Ave house with Greg, John Tyson, Matthew (the dog), and any number of visitors.
John Tyson is the gentle yet rambunctious son of Helms and Greg. He loves to play, read, work puzzles, and snuggle.
Zeb is the funny and sensitive youngest son of Helms and Greg. He likes to jump, laugh, play jokes, and play hide n seek.
